The holiday season can be many different things to many people. For most, it is a time of joy and connection, filled with nostalgia. For others, it is a season of busyness or worse, loneliness. In fact, a 2023 study by the American Psychological Association (APA) shared while 89% of respondents agreed that there are stressful elements to this season, a whopping 41% felt the holidays are more stressful than any other time of year.
“The holiday season can be both a happy and stressful time of year in part due to expectations to spend time with family and friends, navigate family conflicts and uphold important traditions,” said Arthur C. Evans Jr., PhD, APA’s chief executive officer. “At this hectic time of year, it is important that people take care of their mental health, especially in communities whose members feel disproportionately burdened or excluded from what is traditionally considered the holiday season.”
For older adults, this time of year comes with a multitude of additional stressors. Sometimes it is physical limitations that make shopping or travel more difficult. For others loneliness seems to pierce the heart a bit deeper than normal with so many emotional cues this time of year. Anyone who has endured the loss of a loved one seems to approach the holiday time a bit differently than those who have not. From familiar music to long standing traditions, it seems sadness awaits the grieving at every turn.
With such a special, yet difficult time ahead, many older adults and their families turn to companion services to lighten the load. Compassionate caregivers are available to assist with shopping, organizing, or transportation. It can be a tremendous relief to have a helping hand with these chores, but more importantly, it helps to have the comforting care of a companion.
